Leading a simpler life doesn’t have to start when you give up a traditional house and start living in a campervan or a tiny home. There are simple steps you can take right now to downsize and declutter and lead a minimalist life.

People everywhere are starting to realize that owning material things is not the key to happiness., which in turn, is making people question the real key to happiness. It sounds cliche, but the less we have, the happier we tend to be.

We learn to be happy with the simple things in life; our health, our friends and family, the fact we have a roof over our head – it doesn’t matter that we don’t have the latest smartphone or a BMW.

So, how can you start living a more simple life?

Start by decluttering and getting rid of stuff

How to start leading a simpler life right now and embrace minimalism

The first thing you need to do is start decluttering. Go through each room in your home and get rid of stuff like nobody’s business.

Get rid of stuff you haven’t used in a while. As a general rule, if you haven’t used something in a year or so, you won’t use it again. Even not having used something for a couple of months could be a sign that you don’t need it anymore.

You could hold a garage sale, sell these things online, or give them away. You can consider putting them in storage if you’re not sure about getting rid of them right away, but this will cost money.

Be vigilant, and get the entire family involved in your decluttering. Don’t declutter once every few months, either. See if you can find something to recycle or give away each day! Stay on top of this for a much simpler life.

Make sure your home is as safe as possible

Having a home that is safe will give you less to think and worry about, especially if you have kids and pets. Failing to ensure you have put the correct measures in place will mean you always have a niggling feeling.

So, what can you do to make sure your home is as safe as possible? Start with childproofing. Cover up sharp corners, install stair gates, get rid of any toxic plants, lock away cleaning solutions, and make sure your garden is safe too. If you have a pond or a pool, you’ll need to make sure this isn’t going to be a danger to pets and kids. Visit Sparklean Pools to learn more about vinyl liner pool repair to help you.

Make sure you keep the garden tidy too, or you may attract wildlife – it’ll make your garden look pretty, but it’s not the best idea for kids and pets.

Don’t forget why you’re doing this

Each day, make sure you keep your reason ‘why’ in the forefront of your mind.

Maybe you want to teach your kids to live a simple life and to be happy with what they have. Perhaps you want to break free of consumerism. Make a list of reasons and put it somewhere you can see each day! Good luck!
