Fifth wheel owners report more effortless towing, increased living space, and luxurious amenities. The best rear kitchen fifth wheels maximize the floor plan with the kitchen in the back of the unit, but is that the right choice for your camping style?

We begin with this dreamy rear kitchen floor plan in the Riverstone model. It features a dual bowl sink made of stainless steel, plenty of shelf storage for camp kitchen essentials, and more counter space than you’ll find in most RV kitchens.

The huge French-door refrigerator boasts 18 cubic feet of perishable food storage. Plus, you get a dishwasher designed by Fischer and a 30-inch stainless steel microwave.

We come to the first model on our list with a kitchen island, a wonderful feature for any rear kitchen fifth wheel. Solving the issue of limited counter space in RVs is a big part of why designers put kitchens in the back versus having a rear entertainment center.

But a kitchen island steps things up further. In this floor plan, the island is also accompanied by a large transom window behind the cooktop, a deep single-basin stainless steel sink, and solid surface countertops with a granite/marble-style finish.

Setting this 5th wheel up is easy with a six-point auto-leveling system, four slide-outs, and an electric awning with an LED light strip and one-hand pitch adjustment. You can also opt for a second awning if you need extra shade for designing your ideal outdoor lounge space.

FAQs About Rear Kitchen Fifth Wheels

Regardless of the 5th wheel floor plan you choose, here are a few more things you should know before you become a 5th wheel owner.

How much does a 5th wheel weigh?

On average, most fifth wheel trailers weigh somewhere between 10,000 and 15,000 pounds before they’re loaded with any of your camping gear. Total weight will always depend on length, features, amenities, and your chosen add-ons.

5th wheels with luxury residential appliances will always weigh more than base models. If you really want to keep the weight of your trailer down, models between 24 and 28 feet in length typically weigh between 6,000 and 10,000 pounds.

What features are common in 5th-wheel RVs?

Aside from the unique hitch configuration that we mentioned in the opening paragraphs, 5th wheels are also known for having much higher ceilings than other motorhomes and travel trailers.

This creates extra headroom that makes these trailers a great option for taller folks. But in addition to the added room for individuals over 6 feet, fifth wheels are known for having luxury amenities like an outdoor kitchen, souped-up entertainment system, full-sized shower, fireplace, and larger-than-normal pantry.

How much do 5th wheels cost?

Fifth wheels range in price from as low as $45,000 up to more than $150,000. More extravagant layouts are always going to cost more, and other factors that impact price include hitch design, window selection, number of bathrooms, number of air conditioners, and generator size.

Additionally, fifth wheel trailers can be broken into three categories: half-ton, mid-profile, and full-profile models. If you’re shopping based on cost alone, you can start your model search with those categories in ascending order — half-ton being the cheapest and full-profile being the most expensive.

Are Rear Kitchen 5th Wheels Right For You?

PC Forest River RV

First things first: you’ll need a solid pickup truck to tow a fifth wheel. Most models require a full-size truck to tow their weight safely. Start with using Camping World’s Towing Guide to determine just how much your truck is capable of towing safely.

From there, you should understand how 5th wheel trailers attach to your truck. They require more than a simple truck hitch. 5th wheels require a pin box that gets installed in the center of your truck bed.

That pin box must be bolted or welded to the frame of your truck to safely secure a 5th-wheel RV. That requires modifying your truck bed and also eats into the storage space in the back of your truck while preventing you from keeping a camper shell over your truck bed if you want to tow a 5th wheel.

That being said, there are benefits to hauling rear kitchen fifth wheels behind your truck. Here are a few important ones:

  • Increased storage in a large pass-through compartment (even for large, bulkier camping equipment).
  • Auto-leveling systems for easy setup (on most).
  • Higher ceilings create more headspace and larger cabinets for interior storage.
  • Split-level designs allow for more privacy in the living quarters.
  • Many come with multiple slide-outs (sometimes in the kitchen, living area, bedrooms, and even closets)
  • More stable towing by placing the tongue weight directly on top of your truck’s rear axle.
  • Once set up at camp, you can use your truck to explore further.
  • Variety of floor plans with bunks for the kids or dedicated office space for digital nomads.

Conclusion On Rear Kitchen Fifth Wheels

Once you’ve decided on a fifth wheel rear kitchen model, it’s time to grab all your camping essentials, load up, and hit the road. But the big question is: where will you go for your next RV adventure?!
