What’s in the VanLab SUV Kit?
VanLab’s SUV kit is a versatile, all-in-one camping solution designed to fit most SUV models on the U.S. market.
The full kit includes a tailgate kitchen and an extendable bed platform; it comes at $2,500.
The Tailgate Kitchen
The kitchen features all the gear you need – from a gas stove and worktop to a dedicated sink area and two drawers. If you like, you can add a 30L top-loading fridge or cooler in the central box space between the drawers. There are also two tables, one of which is accessible when the kit is closed.

The Sleeper Platform
The sleeping platform is 75 inches long by 51 inches wide and sturdy enough to sleep two adults. It’s divided into four sections, so you can fold it behind the rear seats during the day.
You can add custom cushions to the bed, so you don’t have to create your own mattress. These stack up in the back with the seats up during the day. The cushions add-on brings the total price of the kit to $3,250.

If you don’t want to sleep in the back of your car, you can buy the kitchen-only version of the kit, which is only $2,100.
The kitchen-only version weighs 66 pounds, while the kitchen box plus bed version is 106 pounds.
A Van Lifer’s Opinion On The Living Space
Having spent numerous nights in many different vans, I appreciate the thought that went into the living space design. The small but functional kitchen allows you to cook up a storm in the wilderness. The double bed is comfortable and spacious.
I love how quickly you can switch between camping and driving mode in the morning and evening. After a long day of mountain biking, I don’t have the energy to set up camp from scratch.

Installation and Setup
Installing the kit is quick and easy. Simply grab a screwdriver and follow the instructions that come with the package. Soon, you’ll be able to follow one of the assembly videos on VanLab’s website, which are coming soon.

Expect to take one to two days to complete the build. When in stock, the kits are dispatched within five to seven business days. That’s pretty impressive, right? You can turn your SUV into a camper in just a weekend with very little planning.
If you aren’t handy, don’t worry. You won’t need to modify your vehicle – simple fold the rear seats, assemble the box, and secure it to the car following the manufacturer’s instructions.
If you hate the idea of assembling the kit DIY, head to VanLab’s Simi Valley, California, facility, where they can build it for you.
And if you need to use your car to transport gear or people, you can remove the kit anytime. Nothing is permanently fixed to the interior of the vehicle. That’s pretty handy if you only go camping in the spring and summer.

Price Point and Value
Starting at $2,100, the VanLab SUV Kit hits a sweet spot in the market. It’s cheap enough to be worth the investment.
While you could probably spend less by building a DIY camper box, you’d have to create a bespoke design, buy lots of different tools and materials, and spend months on the build. Plus, you might make some mistakes along the way and waste some of the materials.
The SUV Kit comes ready to be assembled in less than two days and is made with thick Baltic Birch Plywood – the same kind we used for our Sprinter van camper – and sturdy hinges.
Plus, it looks professional. Could you achieve a similar result if you made your own DIY version?
Potential Drawbacks
As with any camper kit, there are a few drawbacks.
- It’s not customizable – you can’t modify the unit to fit your current gear
- You need to store plates, glasses, and cups in the dedicated organizers.
But, in my opinion, the time and effort you save by not designing and building a custom camper box more than make up for these minor points.

Who Should Consider This Kit?
The VanLab SUV Kit is perfect for:
- Weekend warriors looking for a flexible camping solution
- SUV owners who want to go camping a few times a year
- People who want to find out if the van life is for them
- Families and friends who love to have a picnic at the weekend.

Final Verdict
While it’s no full-size RV, VanLab’s SUV Kit offers a fantastic solution for people looking to go camping without committing to buying a dedicated camping vehicle. It’s a comfortable, practical, and affordable car camper.
If you’re upgrading from a tent, your camping experience will be much more enjoyable. No more stones under your sleeping mat or time spent building and collapsing the tent twice a day.
VanLab also offers conversion kits for full and mid-size and small vans, like the Ram Promaster 159″ Cargo, the Mercedes Sprinter 144″, and the Nissan NV200. Check out their website to find out more.
